Is there a deadline?
Yes, and it can be shorter than you think. Many California injury claims must be filed within two years. If a city, county, or state agency may be involved (a road defect, a government vehicle), a written claim is often due within six months. Ask early.
What should I have ready?
Whatever you've got. Don't wait to gather it. Photos of the scene, the bike, your gear, and your injuries. The other driver's info. A report number. Witness names. Keep your damaged helmet and gear.
Should I talk to the other driver's insurance?
Before giving a recorded statement to the other side's insurer, get advice. What you say can be used to argue about fault or your injuries.
